Parent - Child

Why in the world do they knit at school? How is my child's teacher providing for him or her as an individual? Why do they teach the way they do? Endless questions are bound to come up for any parent providing an education for their child that may be different from their own. Appreciation for what goes on in a Sanderling Waldorf School child's day, and how to nourish this at home, is just part of what our parent education program offers. Our school is proud to provide parents with a program that facilitates an understanding of the Waldorf philosophy and what it means to educate in our modern world.  From group meetings multiple times a year with parents and their children's teachers, to guest speakers that provide a unique window into Waldorf, to ongoing parent study groups -- our school strives to make adult education a key element in child-rearing. Our intention for this program is to create a homelike, safe, and nurturing environment.

For the children we want to provide: playthings from the natural world, or simply made toys that allow and encourage the use of fantasy; an extended family or community environment as children gradually become ready to interact more with their peers; nursery rhymes, finger plays, simple songs, and the opportunity to imitate adults engaged in meaningful activity.

For the parents we want to offer: a rare peek into their own child's interactions in a group setting, as well as observation of other children in the same age range; a model of a rhythmic, structured morning, along with songs and finger plays that they may wish to incorporate into home life in some way; examples of simple toys that they can make for their children, as well as stories and activities appropriate to the age and the season; and an introduction to the Waldorf philosophy through articles and opportunities for adult education through the school.

Gosling

Young children this age (9-18 mos.) enjoy being around other children, even though they don't yet play together. It is an introduction to a rhythmic morning with exploration and play, lap games and songs, and a healthy snack. It is also a time to share basic parenting questions, and build community with other new parents.

In Fall 2010, Gosling class is offered on Thursdays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m.

16-week Fall session: Sep. 13, 2010-Jan. 22, 2011

Sandpiper/Hummingbird

The children begin to interact more, and circle time allows for more independent movement as the children imitate the adults. A simple story is added to the morning, as well. The adults can begin to work on craft projects, such as making simple toys for the children.

In Fall 2010, Sandpiper and Hummingbird classes are divided into the following age groups and days:
Sandpiper (Ages 18 months-2 years):  Fridays or Saturdays from 9-11 a.m.
Hummingbird (Ages 2-3 years): Thursdays from 9-11 a.m.or Fridays from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. *Hummingbird classes full as of 6/30/10 - waitlist applications being accepted*

16-week Fall session: Sep. 13, 2010-Jan. 22, 2011

Chickadee

We now move toward the Nursery experience, as circle time and story lengthen. Chickadee class includes an hour where the children go out to the playground with an assistant, while the parents remain in the classroom with the class teacher for a facilitated study and group discussion on parenting issues.

In Fall 2010, Chickadee class is not offered. Please email the school office if you would be interested in participating in a future Chickadee class.
